How Does Social Media Affect Every Generation?

Posted by Rahul Gupta
So how much time do you spend on social media every day? How many times have you been distracted from an important meeting because you wanted to take a quick minute to check a message pop-up on your phone? Remember that person who couldn't look up to hold a conversation with you, all because they were glued to their phone? Well, this is the society that we live in, one that is addicted to social media.
Does Social Media Affect Every Generation
According to a report by Institute for Policy Research, an average person will spend five years of their life on social media. Thus, it is obvious that social media has a huge effect on our generation, after all, something that takes much of our time will obviously affect us.

Social media has led to a generation of highly discontented people. The access to personal information, coupled with most people’s nature to share every detail of their lives on social media has led most people to feel like failures. After all, if your friends are out drinking every weekend, traveling to exotic places, flashing around their new cars, and posting dinner photos of a perfect family, then it is natural for someone to feel discontented with their life. As this happens, you tend to dislike your life, your job, your spouse, and everything about your life.

However, the truth is that social media is a virtual world, so different from the real world. While social media gives people a chance to visualize and post their perfect lives, their real world presents it reality where being sad, broke, a failure among others is a reality. Thus, to enjoy life, don’t compare your life with anybody’s life on social media, because the truth can be different from the life portrayed online. Social media has made people more anti-social. Today, it is easier for young people to spend the whole day catching up and chatting with friends online rather than to get out, meet up and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Social media has created a world where people are isolated, and sometimes even when they are going through hard times in life. Depression rate and suicide are some of the unhealthy habits encouraged by social media. Today, most people especially young people avoid facing life challenges and instead turn to social media to escape the harsh reality. In the end, we have a society of people who are more desperate to show people that they are happy, rather than striving to be happy.

Thus, whether we love it or hate it, social media has become a huge component of our lives. However, the challenge is to find ways to make the most of social media to add value to our lives, businesses, and families. For instance, encouraging better lead generation through social media is one of the best ways to utilize social media to promote businesses. Social media is one of the most effective and highly cost-effective marketing strategies. Furthermore, social media is a powerful tool that you can use to connect with your customers on a personal level. While other marketing strategies offer a one-way communication, social media gives you a platform to get real-time customer feedback. This way, you get the information that you need to create a more customized brand that meets the unique needs of your customers.
